Dr Sofia Eriksson graduated from medical school at Göteborg University Sweden in 1994 and continued her specialist training at the Neurology Department at Sahlgrenska University Hospital Sweden where she also became a PhD student in the epilepsy department. In 1998 she joined the Department of Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy (DCEE) at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London as part of her PhD. She was awarded her PhD in 2003 and continued her research with a post doc in the DCEE. She finalised her specialist training in Neurology in 2008 after which she was appointed consultant at the Neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Since then she has also developed a special interest in sleep disorders. In 2015 she was appointed fellow of Royal College of Physicians (FRCP).
In addition to her clinical care for patients with epilepsy and sleep disorders, she has taken on managerial responsibilities and is the clinical lead for epilepsy as well as sleep neurology services at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. She is a member of the Association of British Neurologists (ABN) expert panel for epilepsy since 2015 and was in 2019 elected to the ABN council. She is also a member of the European Academy of Neurology scientific panel for Sleep-Wake disorders.
Her initial research focused on brain malformations and epilepsy and the post doc on improving the understanding of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by correlations with histopathology. Her current research focuses on the relationship between epilepsy and sleep disorders. She is currently also undertaking a study of the natural course and influence on Quality of Life of NREM parasomnias such as sleep walking.
